Link swapping and banner advertising with parallel but not competitive businesses as well as submission to relevant link lists, (often free), all serve to drive traffic, and boost your search engine rankings - however it should be noted that as many links as one might establish in this way, 90% of all of your traffic will come from one of the top 3 search engines - Google, Yahoo and MSN.

A word of warning: networks of affiliate sites all linking to one another are frowned about on by the search engines, and may prompt them to demote you in the rankings or even remove your site from their listings completely.

URL submission is not the only way to get your site listed and well placed on the major search engines: You can also pay to play. Either by bidding with other websites for particular keywords, in order to purchase the prime screen real estate allocated to the 'Adword' campaigns on both Google and Overture, (in fact overture manages the AdWord programs for yahoo, MSN, CNN.com, altavista etc.) or by paying for the sponsored links offered through Overture - $299per year, buys you priority listing on relevant key phrase searches. Should you chose to do either of these your research will prove very useful, helping you to select the most popular and least competitive AdWords.
