They do, however, help out in two key areas:
- By making the a computer more resistant to network attacks, it
reduces the likelihood of that machine being compromised and
consequently being used to distribute malware via email (or
other means).
- If the machine should be compromised in other ways, some
firewall software will detect and suppress a flood of email being
sent out when it matches the profile of a worm propagating to
many intended victims.
